Isla Mujeres, the Island of Women, where time passes slowly and
your dream vacation becomes a reality. Located just eight miles
across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun, Isla
Mujeres is only 5 miles long and half a mile wide at its widest
point. The downtown area (Centro) of Isla is just four by six
blocks. The average temperature is 80 degrees with 60% humidity
and the hottest months are June thru September. Mapped at
latitude North 21° 11' 5" and longitude West 86° 42' 50" Isla's
terrain is flat with beaches on all sides.
Historically, Isla Mujeres is a fishing village and though it is
now thoroughly discovered by tourists it still retains it's
charm and tranquil atmosphere. As you stroll the streets in the
evening you will see families gathered together in Caribbean
styled homes, tucked between stores and restaurants, mending
their fishing nets and relaxing.
Calling Isla Mujeres: The area code for isla is 998 and all
phone numbers are 7 digits. So, if you are calling from the
United States you would dial: 011 (International code) 52
(country code) 998 (area code) and the 7 digit phone number.
Calling home from Isla Mujeres: Most US cell phones will work in
Isla – it is a good idea to call your provider before you go to
Mexico and tell them you will be in the Cancun Mexico area and
you want to make AND receive calls while there. Another option
is to buy or rent a Telcel cel phone.
From the Cancun International Airport you can take a shared
airport “colectivo” van (around $18 usd per person) or private
taxi (around $60 usd) to Puerto Juárez which is 15 minutes north
of downtown Cancun. There are two express ferry services that
will bring you to Isla. Gran Puerto Cancun (The Ultramar) and
the Magana Ferries at Puerto Juárez. Both cost 80 pesos one way
(about $6.50 usd). The Express boats leave every half hour and
the crossing takes 15 - 20 minutes. Click here for the schedule
and more details visit the Travel Tips page for the airport and
ferry walk-thru.
There are several companies that offer pre-booked Airport
transfers, one way or round trip. They will meet you just
outside of Customs at the Cancun Airport, take you to Puerto
Juárez and will meet you at the dock for your return trip.
Be sure to print out the discount coupon for $5 usd off the official posted price when you take a taxi from Gran Puerto Ultra Mar to the Cancun Airport.

Taking the bus: ADO runs a bus service from the airport to
downtown Cancun bus terminal. The cost is 40
pesos, from the downtown bus station you can take a taxi to the
ferry (around 50 pesos) or if you are really feeling adventurous
catch the "Ruta 13" bus that will drop you off at Puerto Juárez.
If you are coming by car, there is a car ferry service at Punta
Sam, five miles north of Puerto Juárez. It leaves for Isla
Mujeres at 7:15 and 11:00 am, 2:45, 5:30 and 8:15 p.m. There are
almost always lines so it's a good idea to get to Punta Sam at
least 30 minutes ahead of time.
Getting to Isla from the Hotel Zone in Cancun: Ferry service
runs from the Embarcadero Dock, Playa Linda Pier at 9:15 am,
10:30 am, 11:45 am, 1:15 pm and 4:14 pm. The cost is $15 usd.
Taxis to Puerto Juarez will take about half an hour from most
places in the hotel zone depending on your location and the cost
is about $30 usd plus the cost of the ferry (160 pesos rd.
trip). If you are only coming to Isla for the day, it's best to
take the boats from the Hotel Zone instead of Puerto Juarez. The
total cost is about the same and you will save loads of time. The bus is the cheapest way to go
but takes the longest. You can
either take a bus marked "Puerto Juarez" (not as frequent as the
other buses), or take any bus to downtown Cancun, then catch a
taxi to the ferries.
When you arrive on Isla the taxi stand is between the two ferry
docks. If you are staying on at one of the many hotels in the
downtown area and you would like to stretch your legs after
traveling, hire one of the baggage porters who will take your
luggage to your hotel on their "tricycle" while you stroll
behind, enjoying the sights.

Ferry schedule please visit our Travel Tips page.

Banks & Currency Exchange
The Bank - HSBC, is open Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 6:00 PM and
Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 PM. Currently the HSBC on Isla
does not exchange foreign currency for Mexican pesos but the
bank will exchange your traveler's checks. You will need your
identification (Passport and/or Driver's License) to exchange
travels checks. Be sure you sign your checks EXACTLY how your
signature appears on your passport and/or driver's license. HSBC
has several "magic money" machines (ATM's) located in the bank,
also in the San Francisco Super Express store on the town
square. But don't depend just on the machines for all of your
cash needs, they tend to run out of money on weekends and
holidays.
A new banking service has opened on the island called Banco
Azteca. It is actually located at the back of the electronics
and appliances store called Electrica. Their exchange rate is a
bit better than the small "cambios" but less than the ATM at
HSBC.
There are also several Exchange Houses called "cambios"
scattered around downtown and one at the Ultramar ferry dock in
Cancun.
